This is a mix of our own design combining current thinking in aviculture with
the expectations of the Wild Bird feeding Public. Believing that most wild bird
mixes sold in the UK are either waste from human and animal food processing or
simply marketed at an exorbitant price we at Junglegold put the grey matter to
work and decided to come up with our own recipe.
Firstly we looked at the prices of market leading Wild Bird Mixes. We set
ourselves a budget with the thinking that yes people are prepared to pay this
much for a Wild Bird Mix, so how good a mix can we come up with for the same
money.
Also we felt that many current Wild Bird Foods did not contain enough of a
native diet. Nature does it best so best to follow nature. You don't often see
peanuts and sunflowers growing naturally in the UK and when was the last time
anyone came across a tree bearing suet and fat fruits? So we looked at what the
birds eat in the wild and our ability to imitate, as best we could, the natural
qualities and quantities the birds required. We have made concessions but for
good reason.
We also decided to utilise existing products from the avian and wild bird
markets with a couple of notable exception. No peanuts in any form. peanuts have
fallen out of favour with the well informed Parrot keeper due to the aflatoxin
problem and the peanuts ability to block the absorption of calcium within the
crop. Also no whole sunflower due to the mess.
In Aviculture a birds ability to forage is severely restricted and therefore the
diet must be of sufficient nutritional quality to provide for the aviaries
inhabitants. Therefore commercially available seed mixture for British Birds is
of a very high standard. We chose a mixture from a well respected Dutch firm
which also contained small seed shaped pellets full of Vitamin, Amino Acids and
Minerals. This became the starting point for our mixture.
Two Favourites from the Wild Bird Food menu went in next Pinhead Oats, small and
easily digested and the Hulled Sunflower Hearts for high energy and nil mess.
Then a little hemp and few more items from Aviculture.
A Wild Seed mixture containing approximately 30 different Wild Seed, you cant
get much closer to part of the natural diet than that, especially for the
finches which feeder mixes are generally aimed at, and, an extruded fat granule
which contains Insects and Berries, more ecologically correct ingredients. Also
an item especially prevalent while birds are breeding is an egg enriched food
high in protein and calcium and a soft bill specific food enriched with honey,
insects and berries.
All of the ingredients are top quality and as such not cheap, but we fell well
within the budget set and were able with a little knowledge, some common sense
and a bit of trial and error able to create what we think is the best Wild Bird
Mix available at a competitive price to many inferior ones.
