WARNING
Watch out for seemingly cheap parrots, usually African Greys,
advertised in local papers often with a free cage and delivery for about £250.
What the unsuspecting buyer gets most times is a baby grey but not one that had
been hand reared. Most likely a wild caught, they scream, bite and are generally
unsuitable as a pet. So don't get fooled into buying one.
Here is one to watch out for if you are selling a bird.
You advertise your bird for sale (what ever your reason may be) and some one
comes to look. They buy the bird and leave.
A couple of days later they return and say the bird has had to go to the vet
where it either died and the vet wouldn't let them have the corpse or if the
bird had no ring on the vet apparently confiscated the bird claiming it is
illegal to have a parrot which does not have a ring on.
In either case they will not tell you who the vet is, as the vet is very upset
and they only want to protect you from the vet, who swears he will prosecute for
the illegal possession of a parrot with no ring or animal cruelty as the bird
has died. Either way if you give them what you owe them they will go away and
not tell the vet who you are.
Rest assured they have already sold the bird and are in for a bonus if you give
them some money back.
LOST, FOUND & STOLEN
I've just seen the Classified Ads at your website and was wondering if you'd
be able to help with an odd request. On Monday morning our 6 beloved Java Doves
were stolen from our aviary. The thieves left one behind, evidently needing only
pairs, and he's desolate. I was given 2 by my grandparents 18 years ago (one of
the last gifts my Nan gave me before she died) and we bred, accidentally - we
never sold any, they were just much loved family pets, all hand-reared and
molly-coddled. We've contacted the Police, RSPCA and every vet and pet shop in
the area (Norwich) but the general consensus is that it's really rare for the
pure white doves to be offered/acquired. And we're particularly worried about
them being bought for release at weddings, as they would never survive in the
wild.
I know your ads are for saleable goods only but I was hoping you'd be able to
make an exception and post a message about our Doves. Yours is a reputable site
people may well visit if they've just bought or are considering buying a Dove
and seeing a notice somewhere like that might also make people a little more
vigilant about whether they may have seen one of my babies, or even birds stolen
from someone else. arkadina@gmail.com
